After joining a wolf cut pack at the Alexander McQueen show during Paris Fashion Week and showing off her long, stark layers at Valentino with a half-back style, Thatcher decided it was time for a major chop. She turned to her stylist, Ericka Verrett, for the haircut—and they decided to go short.

For years, Thatcher has rocked romantic shags that show off her natural wave. And while the new cut still has some edge to it, I’d classify it first and foremost as a bob.

The short cut was made complete with a new dark shade courtesy of Thatcher’s go-to hair colorist, Travis Ogletree. In a recent Instagram post (in which he also described Thatcher as “the coolest girl you know”) he explained that her natural hair color is a dark blonde.

“Sophie’s natural color is a dark blonde, which we deepen using an ashy level 6 mixed evenly with a level 5 neutral,” he wrote. “The goal with the ash isn’t to make her brunette look cool or gray, it’s to mute the warmth that tends to peek through between appointments.”

This time around, they went darker than usual with a velvety shade that showed its warmth when it caught the light in Thatcher’s selfie.
